Irish Magazine Article On Toronto War Resisters.

Down in the basement of a typically plush Toronto public library, residents from the Davenport Neighbors for Peace group, several US soldiers that had jacked in active service and their partners gathered to sketch plans for their fight for sanctuary. A palpable disappointment dripped - really this was a meeting borne from desperation, some weeks prior the Canadian Supreme Court had rejected refugee status for American troops refusing to serve in Iraq.

One of those present, Kim Rivera, a red head in her early twenties, served in an Artillery unit in Baghdad from August 2006. Not long there she'd hear tales of gore, IED's and guts through the combat zone grapevine. It wasn't the "gory part of war" that changed her mind on the mission but the dehumanisation of Iraqi workers forced to etch out employment inside military compounds.

"We checked the vehicles, the civilian personal for things they couldn't have, like audio players. Things you take for granted every day."

Squat 69

Trailer for a new doc on the evicition of Ungdomhuset:

http://500.beofilm.com/trailer_eng.htm

"As an eye-opener this film is one of the most important films in cinemas and out on DVD
in Denmark right now, being far more relevant than pseudo-documentaries concerning health care
systems thousands of miles away from Denmark."
Cinemazone.dk 12. oktober 2007

"The documentary gives a unique glimpse of life in Squat 69"
Tjeck september 2007

"Four young directors have followed life in squat 69 in the time up to
the eviction, and from that a good film has evolved."
Where2Go september 2007

"A portrait of Squat 69 could easily end up being either glorifying or extremely judgmental.
However, with this film that is not the case."
Arbejderen 12. september 2007

Film Review: The Working Class Go To Heaven

Elio Petri's Sees The Working Class Go To Heaven

Elio Petri's The Working Class Goes to Heaven (La Classe Operaia Va In Paradiso) is a grim look at the psychological wounds imposed by the factory regime on its chief character, Ludovico Massa. Cruelly nicknamed Lulù the Tool by his pissed off and contrary co-workers, in a factory where he operates a lathe, his obsessive output making him the measure management use to gauge everyone else's work rate.

interview with tyendinaga warrior shawn brant

Nine months into an occupation at a previously non-native, privately operated gravel quarry, the Bay of Quinte Mohawks are preparing for winter. The quarry is part of the Culbertson Tract, about 900 acres, which includes much of Deseronto, ON, that is being discussed as part of the land claims process. The land is recognized as Mohawk land, negotiations are around how to return it. The feds want to pay the Mohawks for the land, the Mohawks want the land itself. Until the occupation, 800 dump trucks of gravel per month were being taken from the land under discussion. Now this has stopped, and the negotiations continue.

Oligarchy Kicks Out: Revolutionary Showdown in Bolivia

A NEFAC comrades passes this on from a Trotskyist email list he's on. Of course he doesn't have any political sympathies with the e-list hosts, but thought this is worth a look.

Some background on previous tensions can be found in this article from Irish Indymedia on land reform. Actually I'm going to hold off for something to appear on upsidedownworld.org before before getting excited about anything happening there, especially as regular street clashes are nothing new and rhetoric from the right far from new.

The revolutionary crisis in Bolivia has come to a head;

Quote:

Yesterday -- Nov. 24, 2007-- the representatives of Evo Morales' MAS party in the Constituent Assembly finally broke with the oligarchy and approved, with a simple majority vote, a new draft Constitution for Bolivia.

Hilarious Lecture On Marx The Man.

2_MarxLoungingatVFR.jpg

Mark Steel is a British comedian with some links, I believe, to the SWP. Some time ago he was behind a TV show where every week on the BBC he'd swan through the life and ideas of various classical philosophers and historical individuals. His lecture on Marx is devastatingly funny, presenting a man who as a student "misses his lectures, hates god and gets pissed." In rescuing him from right wing detractors, Steel churns out some hilarity too.
