On October 15, Ottawa joined with 1700 cities across the globe as part of an international day of action in solidarity with the Occupy Wallstreet movement.

This is a montage of footage from Occupy Ottawa, with a musical performance from DOA!

As you may have heard by now, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has given notice and will be in legal strike position as of 12:01am Friday morning if a settlement is not negotiated by that time. People for Postal Workers network is calling for a community solidarity rally at noon on Friday in Ottawa.

Canadians have been deeply concerned about Harper’s hidden agenda. This is the beginning of that agenda coming out into ...the open.

Today it is an attack on our public postal service and the workers who deliver that service. We need to stand up to defend it or tomorrow it will be an attack on all of our public services.

On June 10th, 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will address the Conservative Party of Canada’s (CPC) National Convention in downtown Ottawa. Taking place during the 3 day CPC National Convention at the Ottawa Convention Centre, Harper’s address to the gathered Conservative Party members will be his first major address after winning a majority government in the last election.

We invite all those opposed to the Harper’s right-wing agenda to come together on Friday, June 10th, and make clear to the Conservative Party that we will not sit idly by while they attack our communities.

On 15 March 2011, about 75 people demonstrated against police violence in downtown Ottawa, marking the International Day Against Police Brutality. This was the first year an event was held in Ottawa, taking the lead from the annual march in Montreal that started in 1997. Toronto and Halifax also saw marches commemorating the day this year, while Winnipeg held one the following Saturday.

United Steel Workers local 1005 have been locked out of their Hamilton factory by their employer U.S. Steel since November 7, 2010. US Steel has demanded pension cuts including an end to the indexing of pension payments for its 9,000 retired workers. Adding insult to injury, US Steel only three years ago made extravagant promises to workers that its acquisition of Stelco would not affect their livelihoods.

This can be seen as as part of a larger campaign by employers to use the economic crisis as a pretext to erode essential benefits and wages. This is a struggle impacts all of us. With much of the focus on the election, it is vital that Ottawa labour and community groups stand in solidarity with USW 1005.

DESCRIPTION
In representative democracy like we have in Canada, the extent of our participation in the decision-making is limited to voting every four years. This is quite distant from the idea that democracy is "rule by the people."

The film and following discussion will examine the short-comings of representative "democracy" and look at concrete examples of forms of democracy which allow greater and more direct input for people into decision making. Example looked at include participatory budgets, community councils, workplace democracy in the form of cooperatives, and the role of social movements.

How can we overcoming the domesticating and confining education we experience everyday in our major institutions and media? What does a truly liberating education look like and how do we engage with it? Come and share your thoughts and experiences.

In our contemporary culture, learning how to learn and how to think independently is just as important as mastering any particular technical skill.

And to learn the things we do need, we need to learn to find (or create) opportunities and spaces outside of the traditional institutions and approaches that have ‘taught’ us how to be ourselves.

“40 Days for Life” has once again set itself up on Bank Street in Ottawa, across the street from the Morgentaler abortion clinic. Anti-choice protesters are carrying signs that read things I’d rather not burden readers with. Suffice to say, it’s sensationalistic, sexist, shame-based bullshit. For 40 straight days on Bank Street, an empty baby carriage is symbolically bungeed to a post. Pamphlets are distributed that spew out misinformation already debunked by countless reputable health organizations. Street counselors sent by the Helpers of Gods Precious Children intimidate, harass, and bully women as they enter the building. Catholic school groups travel from Peterborough to visit the “ground zero” site.
