November 22, 2011 — As people across Turtle Island look towards the global wave of protests against the austerity agenda, the memory of the 2010 G20 protests in Toronto looms large as both inspiration and caution. The local Occupy movement in Hamilton began to bear some teeth this past Saturday with a loud and energetic street protest billed as “March on the Banks”. This was the first departure from the weekly rallies that have been gathering in Gore Park every Saturday, in lieu of an ongoing encampment in the city. The Occupy Hamilton group has thus far served as the organizing body for these rallies, but also an organic movement building process that shares aspirations with the global “Occupy” movement.

On Saturday January 29th several thousand people took to the streets of Hamilton in support of United Steelworkers 1005 locked out of US Steel Hamilton and against Stephen Harper's attacks on working people across the country. Dubbed “The People VS US Steel” the demonstration organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL)was the largest in Hamilton in a decade and promised to be “the Largest Anti-Harper Protest Ever.”

In the lead up to the 29th Common Cause Hamilton worked with anarchists both in Ontario and Pittsburgh to stand with USW 1005. Anarchists in Pittsburgh staged a solidarity rally outside of US Steel’s head office simultaneously with the events in Hamilton. Hamilton anarchists coordinated an Anti-Capitalist Contingent within the “The People VS US Steel” as a way to show support for 1005.

Groups Protest Unholy Alliance Between Jewish Defence League & English Neo Fascists

On January 11, 2011, the alliance of the Jewish Defense League (JDL) and the English Defence League (EDL) was challenged by counter-protests from anti-racist and human rights activists. The JDL and EDL alliance was supposed to be cemented in Toronto at an event held by the JDL in support of Tommy Robinson of the EDL, who addressed the Zionist group about his recent arrest. While the JDL is known for their militant anti-Palestinian or ‘pro-Israel’ activism in Toronto and has a long history as a militant Zionist organization in the United States and elsewhere, their alliance with The English Defence League, a neo-fascist organization based out of Britain that focuses on anti-Islamic street activism, seems surprising considering the history of the relationship between Jews and fascist states and movements.

Toronto FC fans protest "greedy" MLSE bosses

It was a crisp but sunny fall day at the stadium, thousands of die-hard supporters for Toronto FC had turned out to see the team off in the last game of the regular season. However, something in the air was a little different than usual.

As the game started a friend and supporter who I watch the matches with texted me, “This is the most fucked up atmosphere ever.”

That wasn't by accident. The TFC supporters groups the Red Patch Boys and the North End Elite were deliberately sitting, and I mean sitting, on their hands for this match. Wearing green and flying green flags with the dollar sign spray-painted on them the protest was directed at what they called the “greed” of Toronto FC's parent company, Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment (MLSE).

Poverty activists use fake transfers to ride streetcars

TORONTO — At a streetcar stop at Queen and Bay streets Saturday about 50 anti-poverty activists boarded a westbound streetcar after showing the driver protest “transfers” made by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) in what they called a “pilot program” for fighting the fare hike.

Driver and passengers seemed in good spirits as protesters chanted “Hey, Hey, TTC! Public transit should be free!” Protestors distributed OCAP “transfers” to passengers and hung a banner out the window reading “Fair rates not fare hikes” as the streetcar headed toward Spadina Avenue.

The rolling protest was against the TTC increasing fares to $3 starting on Jan. 3. The price hike is 25 cents a trip and an increase of over 10% for a monthly pass. Advocates of poor and working people say transit costs are already too high. The fare hike comes at a time of economic recession and job losses, growing poverty, and dangerously low social assistance rates.

Anti-poverty protestors disrupt financial district

TORONTO — Under a blanket of hail, rain and cold weather, 250 anti-poverty protesters marched on the financial centre of Toronto on Nov. 5, The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) organized march took aim at government policy during the recession. The Canadian Federation of Students – Ontario held a separate march on the same day to the Ontario legislature.

“We wanted to participate [on] that day and march into the financial district to point out who is benefiting within this crisis,” says Lisa Schofield, an organizer with OCAP.
