Kenney and Harper are waging a covert war against immigrants and refugees. Swift legislative changes are gutting the refugee system. More and more people are on temporary work programs living in poverty, separated from families, paying taxes, and surviving without the most basic access to social services.
With one hand, Canada and its friends push people out of their homes. With the other, they slam the door, shutting us out. The few of us that are allowed in are funneled into temporary work programs.
Yet every year thousands of people make the difficult and courageous journey here. Those that gain citizenship struggle against racism and exploitation, the last hired, the first fired. Those that are denied, live and work in the shadows, often in fear of being swept up and deported.
On Christmas Eve, four migrant construction workers fell to their deaths, unable to demand safe working conditions. Days before International Women's Day, bullies from Immigration Enforcement raided shelters, intimidating, harassing and arresting women and children in the middle of the night. Workplace raids have increased dramatically in Southern Ontario. Faced with being sent back to certain torture, Habtom Kibraeb killed himself rather than be deported.
On May 1st, we say enough! No One Is Illegal-Toronto calls friends, allies, and supporters to take to the streets for an end to detentions and deportations, for Access Without Fear, for Status for All!
This is a call for solidarity between documented and undocumented people. We call upon all who are denied free movement, good jobs, food, health-care, education, shelter, housing, justice and dignity to gather together to fight for real transformative change.
Knowing that people can only move freely when the systems and policies that displace us are abolished, we fight against the occupation of Turtle Island and the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Tamil Eelam, Haiti and Palestine. We struggle against the environmental attacks by Canadian mining companies from Chile to Congo. We organize against capitalist economic policies, 'free trade' agreements and the G8/G20. This is a call to all who organize against these injustices to march with us.
As workers around the world celebrate International Workers Day, we march for real solutions emerging from schools and shelters, from health centres and food banks, from community gardens and our streets. We are marching to build a city where all people can live with dignity and without fear. A city that does not participate in the displacement and exploitation of people, or the destruction of the planet. We are marching to build a Sanctuary City.
