On August 7th there will be a 5k run, walk, bike, or roll to raise money for political prisoners and prisoners of war, and to support the legal defence of those recently arrested at the G20 in Toronto. The local Running Down The Walls event will take place at Exhibition Park off of London Road West and Glasgow Street in Guelph from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm on Saturday the 7th of August. Date: Saturday August 7, 2010 We have all heard the stories of the Toronto Police Services denying interpreters, accusing Deaf people of "faking", interpreting attempts to communicate as violence, misunderstanding facial expressions that are a part of our grammar as anger, and countless other acts of audism, discrimination, and violence. It is time to do something about it! Join us in sharing out stories and coming together as a united community of Deaf, oral deaf, hard of hearing, late-deafened, and hearing allies! We will share our experiences in a public forum to promote healing and change. It is a day of protest against all deaths in custody, the inhumane use of solitary confinement, racist policing, the detention and deportation of immigrants and refugees, the taking of land through colonization and the criminalization of First Nations defence of their territories, the denial of justice for Aboriginal women and transpeople, the disabling effects of prison, the cruelty of psychiatric incarceration, poverty and homelessness, the separation of families, security certificates, tasers for prison guards and cops, the medical neglect of prisoners with HIV/AIDS, the incarceration of people who use drugs, the incarceration of sex workers and the lack of harm reduction in prison. | ||
