"Code Red" and inequality in our city

This month's anarchist discussion will focus on the findings of the Spectator's Code Red project. Code Red has publicized what many of us already knew: Hamilton is a city of deep poverty and inequality with devastating impacts on the community. But there is much that the Code Red series has not discussed. What are the roots of inequality in our city? Are poverty and inequality fundamental parts of our economic system? What role to racism, sexism and other oppression play? And what does getting to the root of the problem mean?

The anarchist discussion group is a monthly moderated discussion organized by the anarchist organization Common Cause. For more info contact the local branch:

Protest because the Special Diet Allowance was cut

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

In this year's provincial budget the Ontario Liberals cut the Special Diet Allowance, while raising the welfare rates by LESS that the inflation rate. This adds up to a 3% CUT in welfare spending in Ontario. This is only the third time a government has cut welfare spending.

The special diet allowance was money accessible to some OW and ODSP recipients who needed it for specific health related dietary needs, allergies, etc. The maximum amount of money a person could receive from the SDA was 250$. For people receiving SDA money, the cut represents as much as 30% less on their welfare cheques.
