MAY DAY OF ACTION: STATUS FOR ALL!
Saturday, May 3, 2008
12 Noon
No One Is Illegal-Toronto is calling on all allies and supporters to endorse and help organise the May Day of Action for Status for All on Saturday, May 3rd.
Millions across North America have taken to the streets in the last two years, demanding Status for All! In Toronto, workers, students, trade unionists, activists and community members have led passionate demonstrations calling for justice and dignity for immigrants and refugees.
We continue to fight against the Conservative government's ongoing attacks on migrant communities. The last year has seen unprecedented targeting of refugees in Sanctuary. Asylum seekers have been arrested from schools, workplaces and even hospital beds. Families have been torn apart. Over 12,000 friends, family, and community members have been deported.
Dear friends and comrades,
We are happy to announce that we will be launching the next issue of Upping the Anti at 8pm on Thursday, May 8th 2008 in Toronto at the Concorde Cafe ( 937 Bloor St - just east of Dovercourt at Ossington Station). We will be announcing further launch events in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Sudbury and elsewhere in the next few weeks.
Below is the introduction to our next issue which provides an overview of what you'll find in this issue. As always, we encourage you to check out our website for content from past issues and to get information about how to subscribe to the journal.

What: Rally against fee hikes and repression of dissent at
University of Toronto
When: Wednesday, May 21, 3:30 PM
Where: Simcoe Hall, University of Toronto, 27 King's College Circle
__________________________________________________________________
Join us as we rally outside the headquarters of the University of Toronto's Board of Governors Wednesday, May 21, to protest UofT campaign of intimidation against those mobilizing against fee hikes. We will peacefully attempt to deliver letters and 1700 petition signatures in support of 14 students arrested and charged by the University in connection with their campaign for accessible education. The rally will feature speakers from the Committee for Just Education and its allies "charging" U of T administration with misconduct in its repressive response to peaceful dissent.
No One Is Illegal-Toronto invites all allies and migrant rights groups to attend a very important meeting on the recent escalation of immigration enforcement tactics, including workplace raids, and what we can do to stop them. This is an open meeting, to discuss what has happened, to share ideas and come up with responses to these recent attacks.
OPEN MEETING: STOP THE RAIDS ON MIGRANT WORKERS
Wednesday, May 21nd - 7pm
OISE (252 Bloor St W - at the St. George subway station)
On May 6th, the Auditor General released a report, claiming that she had "discovered" that there are 41,000 undocumented people in Canada, people she termed "illegal" that cannot be traced by the Canadian Border Security Agency (CBSA). Increased funding of the agency was the only solution, she
urged.
URGENT ACTION!
Stop the Raids on Migrant Workers! Stop Police Brutality! Don't Ask Don't Tell!
Rally at Police Headquarters
40 College Street (between Bay & Yonge)
Thursday, May 22nd, 2008
12:00pm
On May 7, 2008, the Canadian Border Services Agency with assistance from Peel Regional Police raided SDR Distribution, at Dixie Rd. and Highway 401 in Mississauga.
As the police held the workplace hostage, Border Service Agents swarmed the building, checking IDs, harassing workers, and arresting 45 undocumented women and men.
The raids took place the day after the Auditor General's Report claimed that there were 41,000 "missing" undocumented workers that had to be immediately apprehended. Harper's government has escalated its attack on migrant communities using police officers as its enforcement tools.
