Batay Ouvriye Communiqué May 18, 2010

Port-au-Prince, May 27th, 2010

MAY 18TH

In the context of the Workers Mobilization Month launched during the camps’ first march on April 28th, 2010, and following up on the various activities developed May First, May 18th was a major date (see our previous document: “The mobilization is launched!”).

In Haiti, May 18th is Flag Day. 1803 was when the revolutionary forces decided to have a flag of their own, of struggle and freedom. A crucial date, to establish once and for all direct confrontation with the already open state of occupation-trusteeship upon us today.

Claremont Solidarity Open Meeting - Interesting Struggle

Claremont Solidarity open meeting

Since March 1st, the dining hall workers at Pomona College have been engaged in a struggle with the administration to establish an independent union on campus. Since going public a month and a half ago with the support of 90% of the workforce, the workers have held rallies with hundreds of students, won a public debate with the vice president of the College, staged break-time walkouts and continued to organize in the dining halls. In an effort both to bring more diversity and engage more potential allies to the efforts to organize students and pressure the administration, and to prepare a strong foundation for summer organizing, when most students will be gone, Claremont Solidarity is announcing a new anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian organizing initiative in.

Haïti: Except if?

Here is letter from Batay Ouvriye:

Quote:
Port-au-Prince, Monday, April 19th, 2010

Préval didn’t need an earthquake to hand over the Haitian territorial waters and airspace to Madeleine Albright – under the cover of the DEA – during his first mandate. He didn’t need a natural catastrophe to hand over the land boundaries to the MINUSTAH. So, since a while now, the control of the national territory isn’t the responsibility of any national authority.

Préval didn’t need any quake to praise the MINUSTAH when it openly repressed with great violence the hunger demonstrations, when 7 people were even killed. He never needed any natural catastrophe to renew the MINUSTAH contract each year, even when they never pay attention to him when he supposedly asks for the content of this mission to change.

CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH CHILEAN COMRADES

CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH CHILEAN COMRADES:

Monday, Mar 8, 2010 at 11:10 A.M.

Dear comrades,

The situation in this region called Chile is already known, thus we believe more details about the recent earthquake are not necessary, as the Internet offers a lot of information about what took place.

The group of individuals that make up the Productora de Comunicación Social* escaped physical damage, even though during the earthquake a couple of comrades from our organization were in Concepción, one of the most devastated regions - leaving the site where they were pretty much uninhabitable and losing some equipment used for the work of the organization.

Anarcho-feminist Conference by the CNT in Spain

This appears to be a very interesting program sponsored by the Spanish CNT. This is one event in a whole series being sponsored by the CNT-AIT in celebration of their 100th Anniversary.

National speaking tour on the recent state repression of independent workers' organisations in Europe.

National speaking tour on the recent state repression of independent workers' organisations in Europe.

In Serbia, 6 members and associates of ‘Anarcho-Syndicalist Initiative’ (ASI), the Serbian section of the International Workers’ Association (IWA) have been framed for ‘International Terrorism’ after a different group threw a petrol bomb at the Greek embassy in Belgrade, causing minor damage totalling just £18 (yes, eighteen!). They have already spent over three months in prison awaiting trial.

Meanwhile in Germany, the Berlin IWA section FAU-B (the Free Workers Union) has been effectively banned by bosses at the Babylon Cinema through the courts. Workers at the cinema joined the FAU as a radical alternative to the existing union. The German court has now banned FAU from organising and some of its members face possible prison sentences.
