Slutwalk march in Hamilton a big success. Protesters march on police for the second time in two months.
This past Sunday, June 5, the Slutwalk movement came to Hamilton. Over 500 people marched from City Hall, through downtown and to the central police station. The march drew people of all ages and from across the region. The message was loud and clear: stop blaming victims of sexual violence, stop shaming women for asserting their sexuality and sexual freedom.
It was the second time in just over two months that a large angry group of people marched on the central police station. On April 30, about 200 people marched in opposition to police brutality and in support of the Chinnery family whose son was killed by police this past February.
Anarchists in Hamilton had a presence at both events. Members of the Hamilton branch of Common Cause worked with the Chinnery family to organize the April 30th demo and were joined by anarchists from across the region at the demo itself. And the Hamilton-based Ladies Anarchist Solidarity Society organized a very visible "pink/purple/black bloc" at the Slutwalk march. Some of those who marched with the bloc had been in town for the 4th annual Anarchist book fair, held the day before. Somehow, amongst all this activity, a small group of Common Cause members also made it out to the CUPW picket lines on Saturday night in Stoney Creek.
