Sometimes they're not so subtle

I don't think it's coincidence when the Toronto Star runs a story on a major CAW local leader opposing the no-striking allowed new Magna deal and references an open letter(pdf link) on the Local 222 website by the local president that "troubles" Buzz as "In all my years as head of the CAW, this has never happened to me where a major leader in the union has done this."

Then directly below that story the Star runs an article on how Magna's main corporate competitor is nipping at their heels.

The subtext clear to anyone that reads between the lines is that the bosses at the Toronto Star, who have their own history as union busters, want to say "if a militant challenge to this no-strike sweetheart deal is made, capitalism is still safe as Martinrea Int. is building clout in the auto-parts industry.

Other union leaders on deal

The Canadian Press has a couple of interesting quotations from the heads of other unions who oppose the deal.. From teh CParticle

Ken Neumann, Canadian director of the United Steelworkers of America, declared that "Employers are not going to give something up if they know that the union doesn't have the clout to extract it from them."

And the Ontario head of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Sid Ryan, ridiculed "those leaders out there who think that they've found a new way to work with the boss by giving up the right to strike."

Left cover for union-busting

Toronto Star collumist Thomas Walkom writes today that "Hitler's labour policy died with him in 1945. But, as Stronach and Hargrove have demonstrated, the spirit of co-operation embodied in Industry and Humanity persists."

As usual, the star covers it's corporatist agenda with the odd left wing column on an issue
